Check Out My XBOX 360

September 26th, 2008

I finally received the dreaded “Red Ring of Death” that every XBOX owner has become accustom to.  I feel a little fortunate that it has lasted as long as it has.  Most owners run in to this problem with in the first few months.  For me it didn’t happen until well after the warranty was up.  All the hardware seems to be working properly so I’m troubleshooting the problem and after a couple upgrades I plan to have it up and running again.  Maybe I’ll take this opportunity to make some custom modifications to my console, all the while trying not to do anything that will ban me from using online. Either way it’s a pain in the ass.

Hey!

August 26th, 2008

Well, after a couple months without writing, I’m sure that the few people that visited this blog have all but given up checking in to see if there is any new content. (I swear I’ll try to be more frequent with my posts this time)

Quick update:

We live in Ames now.  We’ve been here for a few weeks now, and for the most part, are enjoying it. Tara loves her new job and all the people that she works with. She also loves the fact that she can take the bus to work instead of putting excessive in-town driving miles on her car.  As for me, I’m still searching.  I’ve had my heart set on trying to get a position within the athletic department and Iowa State, but apparently you need some experience (not just a degree) in the field to be considered. I’m still optimistic and I’ve made quite a few contacts within the department. I think something will come up soon.  In the meantime, I’ve been applying for some less desirable plan-b jobs just in case nothing comes up at ISU.  Collecting trash, bagging groceries, recycling beer cans, whatever. Maybe I could be a janitor, or as I like to call it, a “Master of the Custodial Arts.”

You may have noticed a few display parts of the blog have changed.  I’m still working the bugs out of it so if something doesn’t work(link, etc.) check back in later. (I know the videos and a few other links are down right now) I’ll try to get them all fixed.

One of the perks of our new apartment is that with the lease we also received a free fitness center membership. Tara and I go to the gym together almost everyday, so maybe soon I’ll have muscles again.

So far we’re both really liking Ames, so if anyone was worried, don’t be. My phone still works too, so don’t be afraid to call and check in.

Soon I’ll post a few new pictures of our apartment and maybe some pics of Ames.

Just Married

June 6th, 2008

Yup, we’re married now.  Jamaica was great and everything was almost perfect.  I have tons of photos uploaded HERE and there will be many more to come.  Thanks to everyone who helped make this experience so great.

Just Waiting….

April 20th, 2008

That’s all I’ve been up to lately.  Just waiting for our wedding trip.  I finally purchased my wedding attire the other night.  I think it’s a fairly common outfit for a beach setting.  It’s a white linen shirt, khaki pants and topped of with white blazer.  I’ll admit, it looks pretty good.  That same night we also bought my wedding band.  I’ve never been much for gold so we decided on a nice tungsten piece.  I was amazed that it only took us about five minutes to pick out the one I wanted, especially  considering it’s something I’ll be wearing for the rest of my life.  I All in all, I think everyone is ready for the trip.

Tara had her first bridal shower last weekend.  We initially didn’t plan on registering for any gifts, but with a little coercion from family and friends we decided to go ahead and do it.  We thought just making the trip to Jamaica would be an adequate gift, but everyone seemed to insist otherwise.  We received so many great gifts from everyone, so a big thanks to you all.

I  had a crazy dream last night.  In it I was playing with my 1 year old nephew Hayden, and for some reason he was speaking more fluently than I was.  I woke up thinking he might be a genius.

A Few Random Things

April 5th, 2008

Very little has changed for me in the past few weeks. Our wedding in Jamaica is getting closer, less than two months away now. There are still a lot of details about the wedding that we won’t know until we get there. I still have to figure out what both my brothers and I are wearing. The wedding will take place on or around the beach, so I’m sure we’ll stay with that theme when decided on our attire. Anyway, I hope everyone who’s going is getting excited to go and spend some time under the sun and relax.

In baby news…. some friends of ours (Amy & Judd) were recently blessed with a new addition to their family. Carter Paul was born about 3 months early. He is doing well, despite only weighing about 3 lbs at birth. He won’t get to go home for quite a while, at least not until he’s a little bigger and stronger. Our thoughts are with their family, and of course, lets not forget to say Congrats! We already received a thank you card from little Carter. I was amazed at his stellar handwriting skills. OK, maybe Amy wrote out the card but that just means that Carter can talk already and he told her what to write, and that’s equally as amazing. He even called us Aunt and Uncle. It was sweet.

The climax of March Madness is this weekend. I’ve only filled out one NCAA bracket in my entire life, and it wasn’t this year. For some reason it just isn’t all that interesting to me. The four remaining teams are all well deserving of making it this far. I think if Tyler Hansbrough keeps hitting those outside jumpers, UNC will win it all. Kansas is the most balanced. Memphis is the most athletic. UCLA has freshman Kevin Love (the white guy with the chinstrap goatee) and junior Darren Collison, the fasted dude in the tournament. The remaining games should all be worth watching.

I Went To Ames, Iowa Yesterday

March 20th, 2008

I had the chance to get a taste for the not so distant future on Wednesday as Tara and I traveled to Ames for my first introduction to the city.  Much to my surprise, the drive from Lincoln to Ames was only about 3 hours. It was an opportunity to meet a few of the really nice folks that Tara would be working with and also get a grasp on how to get around the city. All of Tara’s future co workers are very welcoming and willing to help with anything we need.  Ames has a fairly basic layout, which I think will make it easy to get from place to place.  There are only a few major streets and you can pretty much navigate anywhere in about 10-15 minutes.  Unlike Lincoln, there are very few one way streets.  In many areas where traffic lights would be the norm, simple four way stops are located in there place.  It definitely has a small town feel.  Cindy, a friend of Tara’s who is familiar with the area, was kind enough to show us the town.  We all went to lunch at Hickory Park Restaurant Co.  It’s this BBQ place with great food and very reasonable prices.  I have a strong feeling that we may become “regulars” there.  On our tour of the town Cindy showed us all the different apartment complexes and believe me when I say there are a lot.  Every time I turned my head I was looking at different apartments.  There are a few separate areas where all you can see is apartments and between those areas there are even more of them scattered throughout the city.  I think we can find at least one nice, affordable place amongst the bunch.  By the time we made it back home, the day was over.  Now that we’ve had the chance to explore the new area, I’m confident that this transition will be a smooth one.

Deer in Headlights

March 6th, 2008

Wednesday night was the first big physical test for my recently operated on knee. I drove to Seward and attempted to participate in a few pickup basketball games. All in all it went fairly well. My knee held up with a little weakness, but thankfully, no pain. I took it easy though. The last thing I wanted to do was try to go all out and hurt myself right away. I also figured out that not playing basketball for an entire year means you suck. Apparently my once reliable jump shot migrated away from me. Just dribbling the ball was a chore. But like I said, the positive is that my knee is healthy and getting closer to complete recovery. It’s only been a little over two months since the surgery. Once the strength is back I’m sure my confidence in the knee will return too.

My trip back home was also quite eventful. Half way through my drive I saw a deer…. and hit it. I know it sounds horrible, but it was really nothing. When I first saw the deer it was running slowly along the right side of the highway. I hit my brakes instantly. By the time it decided to veer across into my lane I had already slowed down to about 10mph. At this point I thought I was in the clear with a near miss, but I just barely clipped it’s butt with the edge of my front bumper. It all happened in about 2 seconds. I stopped and looked to see where it had gone. It was no where in sight. My pickup had no damage either. It was dark, and I never saw the deer run off, but considering my slow speed and where I hit it I’m guessing the deer survived with minor injuries. My pickup had about four hairs on it and that was it. No blood or guts, just four hairs. After the small collision, I wasn’t surprised by the lack of damage. I mean, I hit a deer at 10mph.

Relocation? (More)

February 27th, 2008

I never really mentioned a specific date when we will be making our way to Ames, but in case anyone was wondering it will most likely be the 1st of July.  Tara begins work on August 1st, so a month earlier seems fairly logical.  I guess that means I better be looking for job opportunities.
